The Opportunity
Highline Beta builds and funds ventures in collaboration with global corporate enterprises across a variety of industries. In some cases we incubate new startups from the outside and in others we support internal corporate innovation projects. For example, we've helped RBC Ventures launch 10+ new ventures in market across multiple verticals. This has involved doing early validation work into opportunities, mockups and early prototyping, roadmap support and strategic coaching.
As Senior Technology Director, you'll work alongside our product and design leaders to make our corporate partners and startup founders successful. This is a player-coach role where you'll spend the majority of your time validating new ventures and providing hands-on support in all parts of the business; as we grow, you'll also build a small, world class team of developers.
What you'll do
Responsibilities
- 80% individual contributor (working with product managers, researchers, and designers on early concept discovery, ideation and rapid prototyping for venture validation, as well as building MVPs and supporting portfolio companies)
- 20% leadership (hiring, resourcing, team coaching and mentorship)
- Ensure a pragmatic approach to product development; you care more about driving customer and business value vs writing perfect code
- Work with product and design leaders on resourcing, developing case studies, as well as building lightweight operating principles / process to optimize team performance
- Manage SRED, AWS, Github and other technical processes, infrastructure, and tools
- Research and propose new technical tools and practices for the organization
- Provide consultative technology leadership to others (e.g. business development, marketing, accelerators, portfolio companies, etc.)
What you'll need
Qualifications
Required
- Experience developing, creating and modifying applications utilizing agile processes, including test-driven development (TDD), refactoring, and state-of-the-art continuous integration, build and deployment infrastructure
- Experience contributing to product specifications (stories, task documentation, implementation, rollout), product goals and milestones (sprint planning, roadmaps, estimations)
- Experience leading and growing a team of developers
- A background in software engineering; or a degree in Computer Science or other related field
- Strong Computer Science fundamentals (Clean architecture, performance improvements, application design, pragmatic programmer)
- Ability to contribute end to end (FE, BE, Infrastructure, Systems, Operating System)
- A history of developing successful, large-scale, public technology software
- Strong knowledge of one or more Object Oriented Programming or Functional Programming languages
- Working knowledge of Lean, User Centered Design and Agile methodologies
- Strong communication skills

- Wide range of development experience (native mobile, web, backend, devops / SRE, data engineering)
- Corporate consulting experience
- Startup experience (early and growth stages)
