The award-winning Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre (SSMIC) is a not-for-profit organization that functions as a catalyst for economic development and diversification in the science and technology sectors in Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding area. SSMIC works with startup companies, small to medium sized businesses, community partners, and entrepreneurs, providing support via partnerships, expert advice, community development, business incubation, youth outreach, sector development, and more, to build capacity in key knowledge areas, enrich talent, and drive business growth and leading-edge research.

Responsibilities

As the new Executive Director of the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, you will lead the development of a strategic plan for the SSMIC and bring clarity to the organization?s mandate, ensuring that the strategic direction defines how the SSMIC fits into the broader ecosystem in Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District. Your first order of business will be leading an operational review of the SSMIC to determine opportunities for more defined policies and procedures, and to explore potential opportunities to collaborate with external partners, such as the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporation, around shared services. Confident and decisive, yet open to new ideas, you welcome the opportunity to work with a very active and interested Board, and an amazing team that is very committed to the organization.

At the centre of this executive role will be the enhancement and development of collaborative partnerships with a variety of key external partners and stakeholders, including the City of Sault Ste. Marie, educational institutions, private sector and government (funding) agencies. You will explore and develop additional funding opportunities and new methods to leverage current funding sources. Raising the profile and value of SSMIC in the community through a clearly communicated mandate, and developing a more transparent, collaborative and cohesive culture internally through increased communication across the organization will be among your other priorities as Executive Director.

You have a proven track record of success in developing a shared strategic direction, possess a tactical understanding of innovation, recognize the landscape and how businesses operate, and can manage the challenge of changing perceptions.

You are a critical thinker with experience in a manufacturing or technology sector, able to manage competing priorities, to make timely decisions, and to share your expertise and knowledge. Success in this executive role calls for your ability to stimulate innovation, to encourage entrepreneurship, and to make job growth and leveraged investment a reality and not just a priority.
